Arsenal have strongly opposed Crystal Palace’s proposal to reschedule their Carabao Cup quarter-final clash to 23 December, insisting the change would be unfair given the tight fixture calendar. The match is currently set for 16 December, but Palace requested a later date due to their demanding run of three games in five days.
Palace are scheduled to play Manchester City in the Premier League on 14 December, followed by a Europa Conference League fixture against KuPS on 18 December. The south London side argued that both teams should have equal preparation time ahead of the quarter-final, as Arsenal will also play Wolves a day before Palace face City.
The option of holding the match on Christmas Eve was quickly dismissed following consultations with the Metropolitan Police and Transport for London. Authorities raised concerns over transport availability, as most rail and tube services will stop early that day. Arsenal, who are hosting the match, were also firmly against the idea of a Christmas Eve fixture, noting that it would disrupt supporters and staff.
Palace later suggested playing on 23 December, a date reportedly favoured by the EFL for fairness reasons. However, Arsenal opposed the proposal, arguing that it would leave both clubs with only one day of rest between fixtures. The Gunners are determined to keep the tie in its original slot, and a final decision from the EFL is expected soon.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said his team should not be forced into a schedule that compromises player welfare and balance across competitions. He emphasised that all clubs were aware of their fixture commitments at the start of the season and that adjustments must be made with fairness and health in mind.
Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, meanwhile, described the proposed 16 December date as “irresponsible,” citing the physical toll of playing three matches in such a short span. He urged the authorities to take greater responsibility in addressing fixture congestion, warning of potential risks to players.
As both clubs await the EFL’s ruling, Arsenal will focus on maintaining their strong run of form as they prepare to visit Burnley, with several key players still recovering from injuries.
