Arsenal have bolstered their attacking options with the signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth up to £64 million. The 27-year-old has signed a five-year contract and becomes the club’s sixth signing of a busy summer transfer window.
The initial fee is £55 million, with a further £9 million in performance-related add-ons. Gyökeres enjoyed a sensational season in Portugal, scoring 39 goals to help Sporting win the league title. His standout performance included a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City, drawing the attention of several top clubs before Arsenal secured his signature.
Gyökeres is expected to join Arsenal’s pre-season tour in Asia, where they will face Newcastle in Singapore before concluding with a clash against Tottenham in Hong Kong. He adds a much-needed presence to a frontline that struggled with injuries last season, particularly the long-term absences of Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz.

Manager Mikel Arteta hailed the striker’s quality, highlighting his pace, strength, and finishing ability. He praised Gyökeres’ intelligence and movement inside the box, suggesting the Swede can bring the clinical edge Arsenal have been missing as they push for their first Premier League title since 2004.
Gyökeres’ career trajectory has been impressive. After arriving in England with Brighton in 2018, he had loan spells at St Pauli, Swansea, and Coventry before joining the latter permanently. His breakthrough came after a move to Sporting in 2023, where he racked up 97 goals in just 102 appearances.
The transfer takes Arsenal’s summer spending to around £200 million. Other signings include Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Nørgaard, and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. The club has also tied down key players Gabriel Magalhães and Myles Lewis-Skelly to new deals, with a new long-term contract for Ethan Nwaneri nearing completion.
Meanwhile, Leeds United have completed the signing of Brazilian goalkeeper Lucas Perri from Lyon for £15.6 million. The 27-year-old expressed his excitement, calling the move a dream come true and praising the club’s passion and support. He becomes Leeds’ seventh signing of the window as they prepare for life back in the Premier League.
