Kenya’s run at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) came to an end at the quarter-final stage, and midfielder Austin Odhiambo believes the early exit could slow down the career progression of several Harambee Stars players seeking opportunities abroad.
The Harambee Stars were one of the surprise packages of the competition, advancing past a tough group that featured DR Congo and Angola. However, their journey ended in heartbreak after falling to Madagascar on penalties in the quarter-final, denying them a historic chance to reach the last four.
For Odhiambo, who netted twice in the tournament, the early elimination has deeper consequences than just missing out on silverware. He feels that failing to make it to the final stage limits the visibility of players, especially those eyeing moves to Europe and other top leagues.
“You have to get to the finals for your performance to be noticed. Once you are out, people tend to forget quickly. The scouts and clubs mostly focus on the final stages,” Odhiambo explained.
The Gor Mahia midfielder featured in three of Kenya’s five matches, with his goals coming against DR Congo and Angola. His absence in the quarter-final clash against Madagascar was felt as Kenya struggled to create chances, eventually bowing out after a 1-1 draw in normal time.
Despite the disappointment, Odhiambo remains optimistic about securing a move abroad. He has long been linked with opportunities outside Kenya, including a rumored transfer to Belgium that did not materialize last year. The midfielder believes his individual displays at CHAN 2024 may still earn him interest, but concedes it would have been easier had Kenya reached the final.
“There were outstanding performers in the squad, some already securing deals locally, while others are attracting attention from abroad. For me, I remain hopeful that the work I put in can open doors, but it’s true that reaching the final would have made a bigger difference,” he said.
As Kenya looks ahead, Odhiambo’s situation highlights the fine margins between success and missed opportunity in international tournaments. For players from leagues with limited exposure, a deep run in CHAN could be the golden ticket to the professional ranks abroad. The Harambee Stars’ early exit, therefore, not only ended their trophy hopes but also dimmed the spotlight on players hoping to take the next big step in their careers.
