Gor Mahia playmaker Austin Odhiambo has opened up about his future at the club following his impressive performances during the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The Harambee Stars midfielder was one of the standout players for Kenya at the tournament, where he showcased his talent on the continental stage. Odhiambo scored two crucial goals the match-winner in the 1-0 victory over DR Congo and the equaliser in the 1-1 draw against Angola. He also put in a strong shift in the group stage game against Zambia, although he was not featured in the quarter-final clash.
His impact at CHAN has raised speculation about a possible move abroad, with several clubs reportedly showing interest in him. The midfielder admits that the exposure and rewards from the tournament have boosted his confidence and ambition, but he remains focused on securing a long-term future outside the country.
“You cannot say that what I have already earned is enough. As a footballer, the most important thing is your next move, not the money you make now because money ends. I am working hard to get a good deal and go abroad,” said Odhiambo.
The Gor Mahia star came close to leaving in 2024 when a move to Belgium was heavily linked but eventually fell through. Clubs from across Africa have also shown interest in his services. Despite missing out on previous opportunities, Odhiambo insists that his determination has not faded, maintaining belief that the right transfer will eventually come.
“Everything happens for a reason. I believe and trust in God. If a move does not happen, then it was not meant for me. As long as I keep doing the right things, the right opportunity will come,” he added.
Odhiambo has been instrumental for Gor Mahia over the last three seasons, contributing goals and assists that helped the club clinch back-to-back FKF Premier League titles in 2022-23 and 2023-24. With the new campaign approaching, Gor Mahia will be keen to hold on to their influential midfielder as they aim to reassert their dominance in Kenyan football.
For Odhiambo, however, the dream remains clear to take his career to the next level by testing himself outside Kenya while continuing to make a mark on the pitch
