Mohammed Bajaber is confident Kenya can overcome the odds and progress from their challenging group at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), despite being drawn in what many consider the “Group of Death.”
Harambee Stars find themselves in a difficult Group A, which includes former CHAN champions Morocco and DR Congo, as well as Angola and Zambia, both of whom have a strong pedigree in African football. The pressure is further heightened as Kenya will be playing on home soil, with the tournament co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Despite the daunting line-up, Bajaber believes the key to success lies in the team’s mentality. For him, fear should have no place in their preparations or performances if they are to make an impact in the tournament.
“We should not be scared,” Bajaber said. “We respect them but not fear. When you fear, you might not play well. At CHAN, we will push ourselves and make Kenyans proud.” His words underline a mindset of resilience and positivity, one that will be crucial when facing teams with a track record of success in the competition.
Bajaber, a talented forward currently with Kenya Police FC, is among the players named in the 30-man provisional squad for the tournament. While he is recovering from an injury that has sidelined him for a month, the 22-year-old remains optimistic that he will be fully fit by the time the team enters camp. His commitment to representing the country is unwavering, and he is determined to make an impact once he returns to full fitness.
“I’m still not ready but I hope I will be by the time we get to camp. I am proud and I am happy we will make Kenyans proud,” he added.
A key factor in his optimism is the opportunity to play alongside Gor Mahia playmaker Austin Odhiambo. Bajaber believes Odhiambo’s creativity and intelligence on the ball make him the ideal teammate.
“I like to play with Austin Odhiambo, he is very creative and we link up very well,” said the forward. Their chemistry could be vital in unlocking defences and creating chances in a group where every goal and point will be hard-earned.
Kenya’s campaign kicks off on August 3 with a clash against DR Congo, a team with two CHAN titles to their name. It will be the first real test of their mettle, but with players like Bajaber setting the tone with belief and determination, Harambee Stars will hope to defy expectations and advance deep into the tournament.
