Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has reiterated that foreign-based players will continue to be given priority over their local-based counterparts in national team selection, despite the strong performances witnessed during CHAN 2024.
The local-based squad impressed many after going unbeaten in the group stages of CHAN 2024, securing wins over DR Congo and Morocco, and drawing against Angola. Their spirited displays put Kenya on the brink of a quarter-final spot, earning praise from fans and analysts alike.
However, McCarthy insists that while the CHAN players have shown great promise, there is still a significant gap between their level and that of the foreign-based professionals who feature in more competitive leagues abroad. According to him, the demands of tournaments such as the World Cup qualifiers and the Africa Cup of Nations are far higher, requiring players with consistent exposure to high-intensity football.
He believes the CHAN stars should use this experience as a stepping stone to grow into fully-fledged internationals rather than be rushed into replacing seasoned pros. “Playing World Cup qualifiers and CHAN is different. The quality is different,” McCarthy explained, adding that Kenya must give the local talents time to develop and adapt to the higher standards required on the global stage.
The coach pointed out that the CHAN squad is a work in progress, and their recent performances should inspire optimism rather than unrealistic expectations. He sees the potential for many of them to become integral parts of the team in the future, provided they continue improving and gaining experience.
Several players stood out in the CHAN campaign, including versatile midfielder Manzur Okwaro, prolific attacker Austin Odhiambo with two goals, and defensive stalwarts Sylvester Owino, Alphonce Omija, and Michael Kibwage. Midfielder Alpha Onyango, forward Ben Stanley Omondi, and winger Boniface Muchiri also earned plaudits for their performances.
Despite some already having full international caps, these players often find themselves on the fringes when the foreign-based stars are available. McCarthy’s stance suggests that this situation is unlikely to change immediately, as he balances short-term results with long-term player development.
For now, the CHAN heroes may have to remain patient, continue working hard, and seize opportunities when they come, as the national team’s core will still be built around those playing in more competitive football environments abroad.
