Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has heaped praise on President William Ruto, commending his rare aura and composed leadership for instilling calm and confidence in the national team ahead of the much-anticipated CHAN 2024 tournament.
With Kenya co-hosting the continental showpiece alongside Uganda and Tanzania, all eyes are on Harambee Stars as they seek to make a historic run on home soil. McCarthy believes that President Ruto’s direct engagement with the team has had a transformative effect, not only raising morale but also giving the players a sense of national pride and purpose.
In a recent visit to the team’s camp, President Ruto promised massive financial incentives. Each win in the tournament will earn players KSh 1 million apiece, while a draw will fetch KSh 500,000. Should Harambee Stars reach the final, a grand bonus of KSh 600 million has been earmarked. This promise of unprecedented rewards has further fueled the team’s determination to deliver on the pitch.
McCarthy highlighted how the president’s multiple visits have been more than ceremonial they’ve had a personal, psychological impact on the players. According to the former Manchester United coach, Ruto’s ability to remain calm under pressure resonates with the team, especially as they prepare to perform in front of passionate home fans. His calm demeanor and motivational talks have helped the players stay focused and grounded.
The coach emphasized that meeting the President is not just a morale booster but also a reminder of the bigger picture what CHAN 2024 means for Kenyan football and the country’s future. The interaction between the players and the head of state has created a unique bond, reinforcing national unity and belief in the team’s potential.
McCarthy expressed confidence that the players will channel this motivation into strong performances. He believes the team is ready to rise to the occasion and reward the faith shown in them with positive results.
Harambee Stars are placed in a challenging Group A alongside DR Congo, Morocco, Angola, and Zambia. Their opening match will be against two-time champions DR Congo at a fully packed Kasarani Stadium on Sunday, August 3.
