Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has expressed pride and gratitude toward Kenyan football fans for their unwavering support during the team’s narrow 1-0 win over DR Congo in their opening match of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Kenya began the match on shaky ground, with early nerves and basic mistakes threatening to derail their campaign. The players appeared unsettled in the opening exchanges, clearly feeling the pressure of the tournament atmosphere. However, they managed to weather the early storm and found composure as the match progressed.
The breakthrough came just before halftime when Austin Odhiambo scored the decisive goal that secured the crucial victory. While the performance wasn’t flawless, the fans’ patience and encouragement stood out to McCarthy, who acknowledged their role in lifting the players’ spirits.
“The players showed how much they appreciated the fans’ love,” McCarthy remarked. “I’m especially proud of our supporters because I know how quickly they can turn when things aren’t going well. But even when we were struggling a bit, they stuck with us.”
The South African tactician admitted that first-match nerves played a part in the team’s shaky start. He explained that debutants on such a big stage often make poor decisions under pressure but praised the crowd for not reacting negatively.
McCarthy, however, voiced mild disappointment that the team couldn’t capitalize on their momentum to score more goals. He felt the players could have rewarded the supporters further with a second or even a third goal, but acknowledged that the team is still growing.
He also noted the motivational boost given by President William Ruto, who promised each player Ksh1 million for every win in the tournament. According to McCarthy, such incentives could have had a positive psychological impact on the players during the game.
Looking ahead, Kenya’s next challenge is a vital clash against Angola, a match that could determine their progression from a tough group that includes powerhouses Morocco and Zambia. A win would greatly enhance their chances of qualifying for the knockout stages, and McCarthy will be hoping for the same passionate backing from the fans when they return to the pitch.
