Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has expressed surprise at the omission of Manchester United winger Amad Diallo from the shortlist for the CAF Men’s Player of the Year award. The South African tactician, known for his outspoken nature, suggested that the Ivorian youngster’s performances over the past year merited recognition among Africa’s elite.
McCarthy, who recently guided Kenya in their World Cup qualifiers, said he was impressed by the quality within the Ivory Coast squad, particularly Diallo’s contribution, and was therefore shocked by his absence from CAF’s final list. The coach described the winger as one of Africa’s most exciting attacking talents and believes his development at Manchester United reflects the continent’s growing influence in European football.
“I faced Ivory Coast during the qualifiers, and they have a strong squad with some excellent players,” McCarthy said. “Amad Diallo was one of their brightest stars, and it’s surprising not to see him nominated. He’s been performing at a high level and has so much potential to become one of Africa’s best.”
Turning his attention to next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), McCarthy named Morocco as his favourites to lift the trophy. He praised the North African giants for their consistency and strong footballing culture, crediting their investment in youth development as a key factor behind their recent success.
“When you look at the depth and balance in Morocco’s team, it’s hard not to see them as favourites,” he said. “They have quality in every position, a clear system, and the advantage of passionate home support. Everything is aligning for them to go all the way.”
McCarthy also highlighted Morocco’s progress across all age groups as a sign of sustained growth. Their under-20 side recently reached the World Cup final in Chile, while the Olympic team made it to the semi-finals. According to McCarthy, such achievements show the strength of Morocco’s long-term football strategy.
“The progress of Moroccan football is no accident,” he added. “They’ve invested in youth, facilities, and coaching, and the results are there for everyone to see. Their development model is something many African nations can learn from.”
With the AFCON set to take place next year, McCarthy believes Morocco’s rise could usher in a new era of North African dominance on the continent.
