Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has revealed what makes 19-year-old midfielder Aldrine Kibet a special talent as the youngster prepares for his maiden senior national team appearance. Kibet, who currently plays for Celta Vigo B in Spain, was included in the 25-man squad set to travel to Antalya, Turkey, for upcoming friendlies against Madagascar and Comoros later this month.
The teenage sensation earned his senior call-up following an impressive rise through the ranks, having starred for Kenya’s U18 and U20 teams. Known for his creativity, technical finesse, and intelligence on the ball, Kibet has been described by McCarthy as a player who “shows maturity beyond his years.”
According to McCarthy, Kibet’s inclusion is part of a long-term vision to blend youth with experience in the national setup. “I want to see hunger, speed, and intelligence — that’s why players like Aldrine Kibet are here,” the coach said. “He’s creative, disciplined, and plays with purpose. He deserves this chance.”
McCarthy emphasized that the call-up is not only a reward for Kibet’s individual excellence but also a statement of intent from the national team as it looks to develop a generation of players capable of competing with Africa’s elite. “These games are part of our long-term project. We’re building a team that can challenge the continent’s best,” he added.
The Harambee Stars squad also features key returns, including Zamalek defender Baron Ochieng’ after a stellar run in Egypt, and Nairobi United winger Ovella Ochieng’, whose pace adds a new dimension to the attack. The team’s leadership remains solid, with captain Michael Kibwage marshalling the defence, Duke Abuya anchoring midfield, and Byrne Omondi guarding the goal.
Since taking charge in early 2024, McCarthy has introduced a high-pressing, possession-based style of play focused on discipline, creativity, and smart decision-making. The upcoming fixtures in Turkey will be crucial in assessing how younger players like Kibet integrate with experienced teammates.
For Kibet, the call-up represents a dream opportunity to showcase his abilities on the international stage. His progress from St. Anthony’s Boys Kitale to Spain’s youth leagues and now to the senior national team embodies the new direction Kenyan football is taking — one that values youth, development, and ambition.
