Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has shed light on why Bristol City defender Zak Vyner was left out of the squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against The Gambia and Seychelles.
Kenya will host The Gambia on Friday, September 5, before facing Seychelles on Tuesday, September 9, in what promises to be two crucial fixtures. McCarthy has assembled a strong team he believes can deliver, but the absence of Vyner raised questions among fans eager to see him in action for the national team.
According to McCarthy, he personally spoke to Vyner, who explained that he is currently managing a heavy workload with the English Championship season underway. With matches coming thick and fast and his contract at Bristol City nearing its end, the defender opted to prioritize his club commitments for now.
McCarthy noted that Vyner’s decision was influenced by two main factors. First, the accumulation of games at the start of the Championship season meant he needed to focus on maintaining peak performance levels. Second, with his contract entering its final year, Vyner is determined to secure a renewal and therefore cannot risk fatigue or injury that might affect his chances at the club.
As a former professional, McCarthy said he fully understands the player’s position. He emphasized that national team call-ups should not feel forced, as pressured players rarely give their best on the pitch. Instead, he wants players who arrive motivated and in the right frame of mind to represent the country.
The coach also reassured fans that Vyner’s commitment to playing for Kenya remains strong. He revealed that the defender has expressed his desire to feature for the Harambee Stars in the near future once his current situation stabilizes.
“I want players to be happy when they come into camp. That’s how you get the best out of them,” McCarthy said, stressing that he is always on the players’ side when it comes to career-defining decisions.
