Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has raised eyebrows after omitting his homeland, South Africa, from his list of favourites to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Despite Bafana Bafana’s recent resurgence under Belgian tactician Hugo Broos, McCarthy believes other nations are better placed to lift the continental crown in Morocco this December.
South Africa have made steady progress in recent years, finishing third at AFCON 2023 and securing qualification for both AFCON 2025 and the 2026 FIFA World Cup their first appearance since 2002. Even so, McCarthy feels that the level of competition and talent across Africa puts other nations ahead of his compatriots.
The former Bafana Bafana striker pointed out that Ivory Coast and Morocco are the two teams most likely to challenge for the title. He highlighted the Elephants’ depth and talent, naming players such as Amad Diallo as key to their strength and chances of going deep in the tournament.
“Ivory Coast have a really good squad,” McCarthy said, noting their balance and experience. “They look strong and could have a big say in this African Nations Cup.”
However, it is Morocco that he strongly tipped to go all the way. According to McCarthy, the hosts possess a formidable team, unmatched home support, and a development structure that has propelled Moroccan football to global recognition. He praised their national setup, pointing to the North Africans’ achievements across different age groups and competitions.
Morocco’s under-20 team recently reached the World Cup final, while the Olympic side made the semi-finals, reflecting the nation’s consistent growth. The senior team’s historic run to the World Cup semi-finals in 2022 further cements their reputation as a powerhouse in African football.
“When you look on paper at the strength and depth in each squad, Morocco stand out. They have quality in every department and the passionate home crowd will give them an extra edge,” McCarthy observed.
While his remarks are likely to stir debate among South Africans, McCarthy insists his assessment is purely football-based. As AFCON 2025 approaches, all eyes will be on whether his predictions come true and whether Bafana Bafana can prove their legendary son wrong.
