Manchester United have been urged to prioritise the signing of Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba next summer. According to Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy, the Red Devils’ biggest weakness lies in central midfield, where they lack power, athleticism, and consistency.
United’s performances this season have continued to frustrate fans, despite a recent upturn in results. Two consecutive Premier League victories against Sunderland and Liverpool have brought some relief, but concerns remain over the team’s overall balance and defensive solidity. Manager Ruben Amorim is under growing scrutiny as the club’s struggles from last season appear to be spilling into the current campaign.
McCarthy believes that the missing piece in United’s midfield puzzle could be found in Brighton’s energetic Cameroon international, Carlos Baleba. The young midfielder, known for his dynamism and physicality, was strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford during the summer transfer window, but Brighton refused to part ways with him. Reports at the time suggested that United were willing to spend close to £100 million to secure his signature.
“I think United need more muscle in the middle of the park,” McCarthy said in his analysis. “They need legs, they need power, and Baleba would be perfect. Alongside Kobbie Mainoo or Casemiro, he would bring the balance and explosiveness the team is missing. With Mainoo, both are young and full of energy — the future could not look any brighter.”
McCarthy further emphasised that relying on the 33-year-old Casemiro is a risky strategy, given his age and declining pace. The Brazilian has been instrumental since joining United but has struggled to maintain his best form this season.
“They need a beast in midfield,” McCarthy added. “Casemiro has been a fantastic player, but he’s aging, and United must start planning for life after him. Baleba is the kind of player who could take over that role and lead the next generation.”
United will have an opportunity to assess Baleba up close when they face Brighton in their upcoming Premier League clash — a fixture that could serve as a preview of a potential summer signing.
