The Harambee Stars head into their CHAN 2024 quarter-final clash against Madagascar with a renewed sense of confidence after successfully navigating the so-called “group of death.” Having finished top of a pool that included continental heavyweights DR Congo, Angola, Morocco, and Zambia, the team believes they have little to fear from any opponent left in the tournament.
Kenya secured 10 points from a possible 12 in the group stage, their only stumble being a draw against Angola. Victories against the rest showcased not just their tactical awareness but also their resilience under pressure. The team’s coach has emphasized that overcoming such formidable opposition has transformed the mentality of his players.
“It has been a hard-fought group with no easy matches. Every team we faced was capable of winning the tournament, yet we came out on top. That has given us belief. Now, it is about preparation, mental focus, and giving everything on the pitch,” he said ahead of the showdown with Madagascar at Kasarani Stadium.
The coach stressed that the key now is self-belief and focus on execution rather than worrying about the opposition. “After the group stage, there is no team we are afraid of. Facing DR Congo, Morocco, Angola, and Zambia was a huge challenge, but we proved we belong at this level. Whoever comes next will be a tough opponent, but our focus remains on ourselves and what we must do.”
Defender Daniel Sakari echoed this sentiment, pointing to the importance of adaptability and tactical preparation. “We study our opponents to understand how they attack and defend, but ultimately, we work on our strengths. Every game requires something different, and adaptability is key,” he explained.
Sakari also credited the fans for their unwavering support, noting that the energy from the stands has played a massive role in pushing the team forward. With Kasarani expected to be 80 percent full, the atmosphere promises to be electric as the Stars aim to make history by reaching the semifinals.
The Harambee Stars’ journey so far has shown resilience, belief, and tactical growth. Now, against Madagascar, they will be looking to prove once again that they can rise to any challenge and continue their pursuit of continental glory.
