Kenya’s Harambee Stars have rediscovered their fighting spirit, and much of that resurgence is credited to head coach Benni McCarthy. The South African tactician has sparked new belief in the national side, guiding them through an unbeaten group-stage run at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.
Since taking charge earlier this year, McCarthy has quickly stamped his philosophy on the team. In just under six months, he has overseen eight matches with four victories, two draws, and only two defeats. But it was the CHAN group stage where his leadership truly shone. Drawn in the so-called “group of death” alongside Morocco, DR Congo, and Angola, few expected Kenya to survive, let alone dominate. Yet, Harambee Stars emerged unbeaten, defeating Morocco and DR Congo and holding Angola to a hard-fought draw.
What stood out most was the team’s resilience. Twice reduced to ten men, against Morocco and Angola, Kenya refused to crumble. Instead, they defended as a unit and struck with precision on the counterattack. McCarthy credited such discipline to lessons learned during his playing days under Portuguese master tactician Jose Mourinho. That mentality has now been instilled in his players.
Another defining trait of McCarthy’s approach has been tactical bravery. Against Morocco, he surprised many by benching captain Abud Omar and star midfielder Austine Odhiambo, instead giving chances to younger talents like Ryan Ogam and Siraj Mohamed. The gamble paid off, with Ogam netting the winning goal. His philosophy is simple: performance in training dictates who plays, not reputation.
Beyond tactics, McCarthy has cultivated strong personal bonds with his players. Veterans and youngsters alike describe him as a father figure who demands effort but inspires confidence. Defender Daniel Sakari highlighted how McCarthy’s belief has lifted the team’s mindset, while teenager Sulieman Mansur admitted he is driven not to let the coach down. Ogam, who returned from a long injury layoff to score against Zambia, expressed gratitude for the trust shown in him.
With Kenya now set to face Madagascar in the quarter-finals, excitement is at fever pitch. Fans dare to dream of a deeper run in the competition, fueled by the hunger and unity that McCarthy has instilled. Regardless of what comes next, Harambee Stars have already reignited national pride, proving that with discipline, belief, and bold leadership, they can compete with Africa’s best.
