AFC Leopards chairman Boniface Ambani has expressed his disappointment over Lewis Bandi’s unexpected transfer to Gor Mahia ahead of the 2024/25 Football Kenya Federation Premier League season. The versatile defender, who can play as a left-back, right-back, and midfielder, was unveiled by Gor Mahia just days ago, catching many, including Ambani, completely off guard.
Bandi, who has been making a name for himself at the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), was one of AFC Leopards’ most reliable players and served as the team’s assistant captain. His move to arch-rivals Gor Mahia sparked a wave of criticism from fans, many questioning why Leopards allowed such a key player to depart.
Ambani revealed that he had maintained close communication with Bandi during CHAN 2024, even when the player was not in the starting line-up for Kenya’s first two matches. He encouraged the defender to stay focused and assured him that his opportunity would come. Indeed, Bandi started in Harambee Stars’ third match against Morocco, helping the team secure a narrow 1-0 victory after earlier results against DR Congo and Angola.

Despite this ongoing support, Ambani was stunned to learn about Bandi’s transfer through Gor Mahia’s official unveiling. According to him, the player had not joined AFC Leopards for pre-season training or undertaken the mandatory medical tests required before renewing his contract.
“Lewis Bandi’s case is very disappointing. I had been in constant contact with him, motivating him through the CHAN games. Seeing him sign for Gor Mahia without any prior discussion was shocking. All we can do now is wish him the best,” Ambani stated.
The transfer leaves AFC Leopards with a significant gap to fill in both their defence and midfield. The club is now expected to enter the market in search of quality reinforcements as they prepare for the new season.
Meanwhile, Gor Mahia have been active in strengthening their squad, adding other CHAN 2024 standouts Michael Kibwage, Bryne Omondi, and Siraj Mohammed. With these acquisitions, K’Ogalo appear determined to mount a strong challenge for silverware in the upcoming campaign.
