Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy could soon have another promising player to evaluate as midfielder Eliot Matazo edges closer to returning from a long-term injury. The Hull City midfielder has been sidelined since February after suffering a serious ACL injury that threatened to derail his career, but his recovery has progressed well, raising hopes of an early comeback.
Initially expected to return to action in December, Matazo’s rehabilitation has advanced ahead of schedule, with a possible return now targeted for November. His manager has, however, emphasized a cautious approach, opting to gradually reintegrate the midfielder into the squad rather than rush him back to full competition.
Matazo’s return will be a major boost for Hull City, who have missed his energy and creativity in midfield, but it could also open an important opportunity for Kenya. The 23-year-old is eligible to represent the Harambee Stars through his Kenyan mother, despite featuring for Belgium at youth level. Having not yet received a senior call-up for the Red Devils, Matazo remains eligible to switch his international allegiance to Kenya.
Benni McCarthy has been actively exploring foreign-born players with Kenyan roots as part of his strategy to strengthen the national team ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The inclusion of players raised and developed abroad is viewed as a way to infuse the squad with technical ability and tactical awareness gained from top European systems. Matazo, with his experience in France’s Ligue 1 and England’s Championship, fits perfectly into this mold.
However, it remains unclear whether Matazo is open to representing Kenya, as he has not publicly expressed his international preference. His performances upon returning from injury could play a key role in determining his next career step, with both Hull City and the Harambee Stars watching closely.
Before joining Hull City in early 2025, Matazo made over 80 appearances for Monaco, showcasing his composure, passing range, and defensive intelligence. His time in France shaped him into a disciplined box-to-box midfielder capable of dictating play and shielding the defense effectively.
If he regains full fitness and form, Matazo could become a valuable addition to McCarthy’s long-term plans, offering the Harambee Stars a stronger midfield presence as Kenya continues its rebuilding journey toward continental success.
