Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has voiced his frustration following the team’s 2-2 draw with Everton in their final Premier League Summer Series fixture in Atlanta. Despite United lifting the Summer Series trophy after earlier wins over West Ham and Bournemouth, Fernandes believes serious changes are necessary before the new season kicks off.
The midfielder, who played in a more advanced role, scored the opener from the penalty spot after Amad Diallo was brought down. Although Mason Mount later restored United’s lead with a spectacular goal, a late own goal caused by defensive confusion following an altercation between Fernandes and Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye meant the match ended level.
Following the game, Fernandes did not shy away from criticism. He identified three key areas that need immediate improvement if United are to challenge for top honours in the upcoming campaign.

1. Cut Out the Laziness
Fernandes labelled the team’s performance as “a little bit lazy,” expressing concerns over their lack of urgency and sharpness. He warned that such lapses in intensity could prove costly, urging his teammates to stay focused and committed throughout every match. According to the captain, complacency at this stage can derail the team’s goals for the season.
2. Raise Performance Levels
United’s overall display was well below their expected standards. Fernandes acknowledged that the team lacked cohesion and urgency, stressing that such performances won’t be acceptable once the competitive fixtures begin. With a clash against Arsenal looming on August 17 at Old Trafford, he made it clear that the squad must improve quickly in both consistency and execution.

3. Integrate New Signings Faster
With summer arrivals Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Diego Leon already showing glimpses of their potential, Fernandes emphasised the importance of chemistry. Building a strong understanding with the new players is vital for the team’s progress. With the club still pursuing other targets, including Benjamin Sesko, the captain urged for swift adaptation to United’s playing style and expectations.
Fernandes remains focused on helping the club succeed, highlighting the need for collective responsibility and professionalism. As the preseason wraps up, he has set the tone for what he expects from his teammates heading into a crucial Premier League campaign.
