Harambee Stars goalkeeper Byrne Omondi has hailed the transformative influence of goalkeeping coach Moneeb Josephs, crediting the South African for significantly raising his game at the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Omondi, who earned a late call-up to the squad, has rapidly emerged as one of Kenya’s standout performers in the tournament. His consistent form has mirrored the confidence he displayed when he was first-choice goalkeeper under a previous national team coach in 2023.
The new Gor Mahia shot-stopper produced a man-of-the-match display in the memorable victory over Morocco, delivering four crucial saves, two commanding high claims, and flawless organisation of the backline. It marked his second clean sheet of the tournament after another composed showing in the opening match against DR Congo.
Although an error against Angola a delayed ball release that led to a teammate’s dismissal briefly blemished his record, Omondi has otherwise exuded composure and authority between the posts.
Speaking after the Morocco win, Omondi highlighted the importance of the support system within the goalkeeping unit. He praised Josephs for implementing a rigorous and effective training regime, as well as fellow goalkeepers Farouk Shikhalo and Sepstianos Wekesa for their encouragement and competitiveness in training sessions.
“The support I have been getting from my fellow goalkeepers, alongside the high-level goalkeeping training, has taken my game to another level. That’s why I have been performing at my best so far,” he said.
Josephs, a former South Africa international, enjoyed a decorated playing career with top clubs before moving into coaching, where he has worked with several elite teams. His wealth of experience has been instrumental in refining Omondi’s technique, positioning, and match awareness.
Omondi also addressed the motivation driving the team at CHAN 2024. He dismissed claims that financial incentives are the main motivator, insisting that the historic fact of Kenya hosting the tournament for the first time is the real source of inspiration.
He dedicated his man-of-the-match accolade to his family, acknowledging their constant prayers, calls, and emotional support. “When the game starts, one crucial save gets a goalkeeper fully tuned in. That save really made me find my rhythm,” he explained.
With two clean sheets already and his confidence soaring, Byrne Omondi remains a key figure in Kenya’s quest for CHAN 2024 glory as the tournament moves into its decisive stages.
