Fans attending the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 will face tighter security and stricter regulations following the announcement of a new ban on several commonly used items in stadiums. In a bid to enhance safety, maintain order, and improve the overall fan experience, CAF and the tournament’s Local Organising Committee (LOC) have released a list of prohibited items as the tournament kicks off on August 3.
The ban includes iconic noise-making instruments such as vuvuzelas and traditional Isukuti drums, as well as megaphones, which are often used to amplify chants and create an electrifying atmosphere. However, the authorities say these devices contribute to noise pollution, interfere with public address systems, and can cause distress to children, elderly fans, and those with sensory sensitivities. Clear communication is essential, especially in emergencies, and these devices often drown out important announcements.
Also barred from CHAN 2024 stadiums are all types of bottles sealed or disposable cups, cans, large bags, suitcases, and cooler boxes. Powdery substances such as flour or colored powders, often used for celebrations, have also been banned due to their potential to cause irritation or panic. Fans will not be allowed to bring in takeaway meals or commercial food items, with exceptions only made for infants and individuals with medical needs.
CAF is also prioritizing political neutrality. Banners or signs with political messages, or those that promote offensive or discriminatory language based on race, gender, religion, or nationality, are not allowed. Organizers stress that the tournament is meant to promote unity and showcase football excellence, not serve as a stage for political or ideological campaigns.
Animals, excluding certified assistance dogs, and any devices capable of jamming communication signals will also be turned away at security checks. Anyone arriving with restricted items will either be denied entry or asked to dispose of the items before accessing the stadium.
These new measures aim to create a safe, inclusive, and family-friendly environment across all CHAN 2024 venues, reinforcing the importance of security while ensuring fans still enjoy the excitement of African football.
