Tanzanian giants Azam FC have set modest expectations ahead of their historic CAF Confederation Cup group-stage debut, pinpointing AS Maniema Union and Wydad Athletic Club as the top contenders in Group B. The Chamazi-based side travelled to Kinshasa for their opening fixture against Maniema, a match that will officially usher them into a new chapter of continental football.
For Azam, reaching the group stage marks a major milestone as they continue to grow their footprint beyond Tanzanian borders. Head coach Florent Ibenge, who returns to a familiar environment in the DR Congo after his successful stint with AS Vita Club, acknowledged that his team enters the group as underdogs but remains hopeful of upsetting expectations.
According to Ibenge, the group resembles a “mini-league” where each team has six opportunities to stake their claim for a quarter-final slot. Despite recognising the strength of their opponents, he expressed confidence that Azam are not merely participants but competitors ready to challenge the status quo.
AS Maniema Union, their first opponents, carry significant experience after competing in the CAF Champions League group phase last season. Their familiarity with continental football, coupled with home support in Kinshasa, places them among the main favourites. The other heavyweight in the group, Wydad AC, boasts a decorated continental history with three CAF Champions League titles, although the Confederation Cup remains the one major trophy missing from their cabinet.
Ibenge admitted that Maniema and Wydad hold the favourites tag, placing Azam third in the perceived pecking order. However, he insisted that rankings mean little once the team steps onto the pitch. His ambition is clear—approach every match with a winning mentality and instil belief among his players that they can secure points anywhere, including away in Congo.
Nairobi United, another debutant in the group, enter the competition on the back of an impressive penalty shootout triumph against Etoile Sportive du Sahel. Yet, the Kenyan side did not feature in Ibenge’s assessment of the main contenders, suggesting they may be viewed as outsiders.
Azam FC will hold their final training session in Kinshasa before Sunday’s clash, hoping to begin their maiden group-stage journey with a statement performance and potentially upset the predicted hierarchy in Group B.
