Promotion Contenders
Birmingham City and Ipswich Town enter the campaign with high expectations, both linked with striker Chuba Akpom in the window. Ipswich, despite relegation, held their own in the Premier League and retain a strong core under Kieran McKenna. Birmingham, aiming for back-to-back promotions, carry momentum and have bolstered their squad impressively. Leicester and Southampton are also firmly in the promotion frame. Despite facing possible points deductions, Leicester’s depth could prove decisive, while Southampton’s returning players could anchor a push back to the top flight. Sheffield United, under new management, and Coventry City, rejuvenated by Frank Lampard, are also in contention, though both have key issues to resolve especially in front of goal.
Playoff Hopefuls
Millwall are expected to push for the top six again after a strong finish last season, boosted by the signing of Alfie Doughty. Derby County could be dark horses, especially if Rhian Brewster rediscovers his form. West Brom’s fate may hinge on Aune Heggebø’s ability to adapt quickly. Norwich City, undergoing a full rebuild, have signed 11 players, while Middlesbrough and Stoke City are searching for stability and consistency. Swansea City, despite celebrity investment, need attacking reinforcements, and Bristol City appear solid but not markedly improved. Portsmouth, Charlton, and Wrexham are also looking upwards, building on solid foundations.
Relegation Candidates
Sheffield Wednesday face significant off-field challenges, including stadium safety concerns and limited training facilities. Hull City are in a similar financial bind and appear ill-equipped for the fight ahead. Blackburn Rovers have lost key players, while Oxford United and Preston may struggle due to limited resources. QPR and Watford, both under inexperienced managers, could also be dragged into the mire.
Youngsters to Watch
Jeremy Monga (Leicester, 16) is a dynamic winger attracting elite interest and is set to sign pro terms next summer. Mihailo Ivanovic (Millwall, 20) is a Golden Boot outsider after a strong finish to last season. Jay Robinson (Southampton, 18) could establish himself in midfield after impressing in pre-season and earning a long-term contract.
The season kicks off with high expectations and no shortage of storylines across England’s most competitive division.
