Ahead of their crucial CHAN 2024 Group Stage clash against Angola, Harambee Stars have been urged to make key tactical adjustments to boost their performance and maintain their winning momentum.
Kenya kicked off their African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign on a high note, securing a 1-0 victory over DR Congo in front of an enthusiastic home crowd at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Austin Odhiambo’s decisive first-half goal sealed the win against the two-time champions, sending the stadium into celebration and giving Kenya a promising start.
However, despite the win, areas for improvement have been highlighted. A former national team coach and experienced football tactician noted that while the players showed determination and grit, the team’s defensive line lacked the composure and structure required at this level of competition. The early moments of the match, in particular, revealed vulnerabilities that a clinical side like Angola could exploit.
He stressed the need for a more solid and coordinated backline, especially with the upcoming fixtures being more demanding. He also pointed out the importance of fullbacks remaining alert and the midfield playing a more supportive role in shielding the defence. The team’s transitions between defence and attack need to be smoother, and the midfield must avoid exposing the backline.
In attack, he urged the Harambee Stars to sharpen their forward play and increase attacking frequency. Creating more scoring opportunities and putting consistent pressure on the opposing defence will be critical against a physical and technically disciplined Angolan side.
He acknowledged the efforts of head coach Benni McCarthy, who is still in the process of rebuilding the team and instilling a new tactical identity. With several young players featuring in the squad, the coach’s vision of a dynamic and disciplined side is beginning to take shape.
Kenya’s path in Group C doesn’t get any easier. After facing Angola on August 7, they will take on Morocco on August 10 before concluding the group stage against Zambia on August 17. All matches are set to be held at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, where fans will be expecting nothing less than passion, fight, and tactical growth from their team.
