African football fans are gearing up for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which kicks off on August 2, with Group D promising intense competition and exciting matchups. The group features four strong teams Senegal, Nigeria, Congo, and Sudan all vying for two coveted spots in the quarterfinals. Matches will take place across two locations: Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam, showcasing the footballing passion and talent spread across the continent.
The tournament, open exclusively to players who ply their trade in their national domestic leagues, was postponed by six months to allow the hosts Tanzania and Zanzibar time to complete stadium upgrades. This added preparation time is expected to raise the standard of competition and provide fans with a memorable spectacle.
Senegal enter the tournament with high hopes under head coach Souleymane Diallo. They open their campaign against Nigeria, a clash expected to set the tone for Group D. Diallo emphasized the mental preparedness needed for the opener, urging his team to embody the calm but focused “African mentality” required to succeed in tournament football.
Nigeria makes a long-awaited return to CHAN, having missed the competition since 2016. Now led by Malian-born coach Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles overcame a challenging qualification route, eliminating rivals Ghana to secure their place. Chelle’s arrival has rejuvenated the squad, and Nigeria will look to make an immediate impact.
Congo brings a wealth of experience, having reached the CHAN quarterfinals in 2018 and 2020. Known for their defensive resilience and physical approach, they remain a formidable force and could easily disrupt any opponent’s rhythm. Sudan, meanwhile, enters with a rich CHAN history and tactical organization. Their opening clash against Congo will be pivotal in shaping their trajectory in the group.
The entire tournament will be broadcast live via CAF’s official media partners, including SuperSport and beIN Sports, allowing fans across Africa to catch every thrilling moment.
