Motorists in Nairobi have been advised to avoid using Thika Road on Thursday, August 7, unless they are heading to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, for the eagerly anticipated CHAN 2024 clash between Kenya’s Harambee Stars and Angola.
The directive comes amid expectations of heavy traffic as tens of thousands of fans are set to throng the 48,000-capacity Kasarani Stadium for the high-stakes Group A fixture. With all match tickets already sold out, the National Police Service has announced a series of road closures and diversions to manage congestion and ensure safety around the match venues.
According to Nairobi’s traffic authorities, Thika Road will be strictly reserved for vehicles traveling to the stadium. Motorists not attending the match are urged to use alternative routes including Kiambu Road, Limuru Road, and the Eastern Bypass to avoid unnecessary delays.
Public service vehicles ferrying fans to Kasarani are required to follow designated routes. These include Ruaraka–Baba Dogo Road and Ngomongo Road, with drop-offs directed towards Ngomongo Roundabout to facilitate smooth flow of traffic.
Additionally, vehicles heading from Thika Road into Nairobi’s central business district will be rerouted through Kiambu Road, Limuru Road, or the Eastern Bypass.
On the same day, another Group A fixture between DR Congo and Zambia will take place at Nyayo National Stadium, kicking off at 4:00 PM. As a result, further road restrictions will be in effect around the stadium to facilitate matchday logistics and ensure crowd safety.
Key roads affected include Douglas Wakiihuri Road, which will be fully closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout. Partial closures will also affect Langata Road (from Madaraka to Lusaka Roundabout) and Mombasa Road (from Lusaka to Bunyala Roundabout).
For those heading into the city from Mombasa Road, recommended alternatives include Likoni–Enterprise Road at the General Motors junction or the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni. From Langata Road, motorists are encouraged to use Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road.
With massive crowds and heightened activity expected around both Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums, Nairobi residents are urged to plan their journeys early, remain patient, and follow instructions issued by traffic police.
