The Harambee Stars’ remarkable journey at CHAN 2024 has been marked not only by stunning victories but also by unprecedented presidential rewards. Ahead of their final Group A clash against Zambia, President William Ruto has pledged to give each player Ksh2.5 million if they secure a win.
This latest incentive represents a significant boost from his earlier promise of Ksh1 million for every group-stage victory and Ksh500,000 for a draw. The increase aims to motivate the players to finish the group stage on a high and maintain their winning momentum heading into the knockout rounds.
The promise was made during a meeting with the team in Nairobi, following their unforgettable 1-0 triumph over Morocco at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. That result, achieved despite playing much of the match with 10 men, has heightened belief within the squad and across the nation.
In addition to the Zambia match bonus, the president has also offered further rewards for success in the quarter-finals Ksh1 million per player plus an affordable housing unit for each squad member if they win. This gesture comes in response to earlier requests from players, led by goalkeeper Faruk Shikhalo, for inclusion in the government’s affordable housing programme.
Kenya’s CHAN 2024 run has been nothing short of inspirational. Co-hosting the tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania, the Harambee Stars opened with a 1-0 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo, followed by a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Angola. The victory over Africa’s top-ranked team, Morocco, was the most impressive yet, with Ryan Wesley Ogam’s decisive goal sparking nationwide celebrations.
So far, from their first three matches under the president’s initial incentive scheme, each player has earned Ksh2.5 million. With seven points from three games, Kenya currently sit top of Group A and are virtually assured of a place in the quarter-finals.
There is even the tantalising possibility of an East African derby in the knockout stages, with Tanzania topping Group B after a perfect group run. For now, all eyes are on the Zambia clash, where victory could not only extend Kenya’s dream run but also see the players walk away with another historic windfall.
