Newly-signed Gor Mahia defender Siraj Mohammed has praised head coach Benni McCarthy’s tactical approach, crediting it for keeping Harambee Stars composed even when reduced to 10 men in crucial CHAN 2024 matches.
Harambee Stars began their CHAN 2024 campaign with a memorable 1-0 victory over two-time champions DR Congo at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The momentum continued with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Angola in their second group match, despite playing with a man down after a red card. Angola had been under pressure following a 2-0 loss to Morocco in their opening game.
The highlight came when Harambee Stars stunned Morocco with a narrow but decisive 1-0 victory. Once again, Kenya was forced to adapt after being reduced to 10 men, but McCarthy’s game plan ensured the team maintained discipline, shape, and focus until the final whistle.
Siraj Mohammed, who made his Harambee Stars debut in the Morocco match, revealed that McCarthy’s tactics had been instrumental in instilling confidence and composure during challenging situations. According to the defender, the team had prepared specifically for scenarios where they might be forced to play with fewer players, allowing them to remain competitive and organized under pressure.
“This is not the first time we’ve faced this situation,” Siraj noted. “Against Angola, we were also given a red card, but we stuck to the strategy the coach provided, and it allowed us to manage the game well. Scoring early was key, and we defended as a unit to secure the win.”
He also highlighted the critical role of fans, acknowledging that many doubted their ability to beat Morocco. However, the squad’s determination and adherence to the coach’s plan proved those doubts wrong.
Siraj expressed confidence that the victory over Morocco signals a steady rise in the standards of Kenyan football. He believes that continued fan support will further boost the team’s performance and morale as they progress in the tournament.
With their final group-stage match against Zambia set for Sunday, August 17, Harambee Stars will be looking to seal a smooth passage to the quarterfinals. All eyes will be on McCarthy’s tactical approach and the players’ ability to execute under pressure once again.
