Uganda head into their CHAN 2024 quarter-final clash against Senegal with the weight of East Africa’s hopes on their shoulders after Kenya and Tanzania both suffered painful eliminations.
All three co-hosts – Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda – had impressed by advancing beyond the group stages. However, the Harambee Stars of Kenya were the first to exit after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout loss to Madagascar following a 1-1 draw in regulation time. Tanzania soon followed, falling 1-0 to Morocco in Dar es Salaam. That has left Uganda as the region’s last standing representative in the tournament.
The Cranes now face a formidable task against defending champions Senegal in Kampala, knowing victory would not only be historic for the country but also a source of pride for East Africa.
Uganda’s coach has urged his side to rise to the occasion, acknowledging the challenge ahead while stressing the importance of home support. He described the clash as a battle of character and discipline, pointing out that Senegal’s experience and pedigree make them tough opponents. However, the belief is strong within the Ugandan camp that the passion of their fans could inspire them to a famous win.
Senegal, meanwhile, approach the tie with quiet confidence. The West Africans, who lifted the trophy in the last edition, know they carry the favourites’ tag but are cautious of the dangers Uganda pose, especially with the home advantage. Their coach has underlined the need for composure, reminding his players that knockout football allows no margin for error.
Uganda’s route to the last eight was filled with drama. They began their campaign with a heavy 3-0 defeat to Algeria but responded brilliantly with a 3-0 victory over Guinea and a 2-0 triumph against Niger. A thrilling 3-3 draw with South Africa sealed their place at the top of Group C.
Senegal were steady rather than spectacular in their group, collecting five points from a 1-0 win over Nigeria and goalless draws with Congo and Sudan. While they have yet to hit top gear, their defensive solidity and ability to grind out results underline why they remain tournament favourites.
The winner of this quarter-final will set up a semi-final showdown with Morocco, raising the stakes even higher. For Uganda, it is more than just a match it is an opportunity to keep the “Pamoja” spirit alive and ensure East Africa still has a voice in CHAN 2024.
