Gor Mahia claimed a crucial 2-0 win over defending champions Kenya Police FC in an FKF Premier League clash at Nyayo National Stadium, propelling the team to the top of the 2025/26 league standings with 16 points.
The victory ended Kenya Police’s unbeaten start to the season and showcased a disciplined performance guided by head coach Charles Akonnor’s tactical acumen. Gor Mahia dominated from the outset, controlling possession and putting pressure on the opposition throughout the first half.
Felix Oluoch opened the scoring early, assisted by Ghanaian forward Ebenezer Adu-Kwaw, before Musa Shariff doubled the lead in the 33rd minute, securing the three points for the visitors. Despite a stronger second-half showing from Kenya Police, Gor Mahia maintained composure and saw out the win.
Akonnor revealed that the team’s success was rooted in careful preparation. “We watched Police play Sofapaka earlier in the week, and after analysing their weaknesses, we switched our formation from 4-3-3 to 3-5-2. It worked well, we scored two early goals, and the players executed the plan perfectly,” he said.
The second half presented fresh challenges as Kenya Police made key substitutions, opting for longer balls to break Gor Mahia’s rhythm. However, the team’s calm and structured approach allowed them to protect their lead effectively.
With the win, Gor Mahia overtook Kakamega Homeboyz at the top of the league, a position Akonnor acknowledges comes with responsibility. “Being top means the pressure is on us, and we must work hard to maintain it,” he noted.
Despite the convincing result, the coach identified areas for improvement, particularly in set-piece situations. “We need to improve defending and attacking set pieces. Our opponents had a free header, which should not have happened,” he added.
Gor Mahia will next face Tusker FC at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, after the international break, aiming to extend their unbeaten run and consolidate their lead at the top of the FKF Premier League table.
