Coventry City returned to the summit of the Championship after securing a 2-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers. The Sky Blues had briefly fallen to second following Middlesbrough’s win over Ipswich on Friday, but goals from Victor Torp and Brandon Thomas-Asante ensured they reclaimed first place. Liam Kitching nearly added a third late on but headed over from close range. Coventry’s tactical adjustments after the break proved decisive against a well-organised Blackburn side that pressed aggressively in the first half.
Stoke City climbed to third after edging Wrexham 1-0 to end a four-game winless streak. The breakthrough came in the 36th minute when Sorba Thomas’s cross from the left drifted into the net. The victory lifted Stoke back into the promotion conversation while leaving Wrexham in 18th, continuing their inconsistent start to the campaign.
Leicester City slipped further behind their promotion rivals after a 1-1 draw with Portsmouth. Aaron Ramsey gave the hosts the lead midway through the first half, finishing off Abdul Fatawu’s cross, but John Swift equalised after leading a quick counterattack for Portsmouth. The result leaves Leicester fourth, five points adrift of Coventry, and marks their fifth draw in six matches. Portsmouth, meanwhile, extended their unbeaten run to three.
West Bromwich Albion moved back into the top six with a 2-1 win over Preston at the Hawthorns. Mikey Johnston opened the scoring with a stunning 25-yard strike, and Isaac Price doubled the advantage with his fourth goal of the season. Preston, previously unbeaten in five, pulled one back through Michael Smith but failed to salvage a point.
Elsewhere, Sheffield United climbed off the bottom of the table after a crucial 1-0 home win against Watford, with Callum O’Hare scoring the only goal. Their city rivals Sheffield Wednesday replaced them at the foot following a 2-1 defeat at Charlton and a red card for goalkeeper Ethan Horvath in added time.
Hull City ended Birmingham’s remarkable 29-game unbeaten home run with a dramatic 3-2 victory at St Andrew’s, while Bristol City inflicted more misery on Norwich with a 1-0 win at Carrow Road. Oxford United beat Derby 1-0 thanks to Stan Mills’s first goal of the season, and Southampton were left frustrated after dominating Swansea but being held to a goalless draw despite 21 shots and two strikes against the post.
