Former AFC Leopards chairman Dan Shikanda has voiced strong confidence that the club can finally end its 27-year wait for a league title — but only if internal wrangles are kept at bay.
Shikanda, who completed his two terms as chairman in June before being succeeded by former striker Bonface Ambani, believes that the current setup under coach Fred Ambani is strong enough to go all the way. Leopards endured a slow start to the season with three consecutive draws, but have since bounced back impressively, registering three straight wins and maintaining a 14-match unbeaten streak.
According to Shikanda, this positive momentum is a result of consistency and a solid foundation built over the years. He praised the team’s chemistry, noting that minimal changes in the playing unit have allowed the squad to gel quickly and play with confidence. “They have only added a few new faces, and the core of the team remains the same. That stability has made a big difference,” he explained.
However, Shikanda was quick to warn that off-pitch issues could derail their progress. “This is the year AFC Leopards can win the league if stupid wrangles are avoided,” he said. He urged the club’s leadership, supporters, and players to work in harmony, emphasizing that discipline, patience, and unity will be key in the title race.
He further stressed that success will not come overnight, calling for fans to remain patient and continue supporting the team. “Rome was not built in a day. The fans should trust the process, give the coach time, and allow the leadership to execute their vision,” he remarked.
Since taking over as chairman, Bonface Ambani has brought renewed energy to the club, with Fred Ambani blending seasoned players and promising young talents like James Kinyanjui, who has been instrumental in their unbeaten run.
Shikanda, a former Leopards player in the 1980s, said he recognizes the same fighting spirit in the current squad that once defined his playing days. “We have a team that can do it,” he said. “Now, it’s just about everyone pulling in the same direction.”
With unity and focus, AFC Leopards’ dream of ending their long-standing title drought could finally become a reality.
