Pedigree and patience proved decisive as Daryz produced a sensational late surge to win the 104th Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, catching the hot favourite Minnie Hauk in the final strides. Running in the iconic green and red colours of the late Aga Khan IV, Daryz’s victory carried both emotional and historical significance, marking the seventh Arc triumph for the famous racing dynasty.
The three-year-old colt, making only his seventh career start and his first attempt at the mile-and-a-half distance, showcased the perfect blend of stamina and determination. His trainer, Francis-Henri Graffard, described the win as the result of meticulous planning and patient preparation, particularly after a disappointing performance in the International Stakes at York earlier in the season. That experience, he said, was essential in helping Daryz mature into the consummate racehorse seen in Paris.
Under a composed ride from Mickaël Barzalona, Daryz settled smoothly in mid-pack before powering through the field in the home straight. Minnie Hauk, unbeaten in her four previous starts, had looked destined for victory after making her move under Christophe Soumillon, but Daryz’s relentless finish saw him snatch the win by a head. Sosie, fourth in last year’s edition, ran on for third, finishing several lengths behind the leading pair.
For Barzalona, it was a moment of long-awaited redemption. Fourteen years after his memorable Derby victory aboard Pour Moi, the French jockey finally added the Arc to his list of career achievements. “We’ve always believed in Daryz,” he said. “He’s improved mentally and physically since York, and today everything came together. He was calm, strong, and full of determination.”
The victory was equally significant for Graffard, capping off a stellar season that also included a King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes win with Calandagan. Princess Zahra Aga Khan, representing the family’s renowned breeding operation, was moved by the moment, describing it as a dream realized and a tribute to her late father’s legacy.
Minnie Hauk’s connections were gracious in defeat, acknowledging that the filly had run a magnificent race. With plans for her to remain in training next year, she could return to Longchamp in 2026 for another shot at glory.
For Daryz and his connections, however, this triumph will be remembered as the crowning moment of a remarkable season — a performance of heart, heritage, and pure class at Europe’s greatest race.
