Divock Origi has finally broken his silence after a year away from the spotlight, sharing a heartfelt message in the wake of a personal tragedy that has rocked the football community.
The former Liverpool forward has endured a difficult few years since his departure from Anfield in the summer of 2022. After ending a six-year stay at the club where he etched his name into folklore with iconic goals most notably in the Champions League Origi made the move to AC Milan as a free agent, seemingly a fresh start for the Belgian.
However, what initially appeared to be a promising step quickly turned into a nightmare. Origi signed a four-year deal worth €4 million annually, but his time in Italy was far from successful. Across all competitions, he featured for just 1,187 minutes and scored only two goals. Disappointed with his output, Milan deemed him surplus to requirements.
He was sent out on loan to Nottingham Forest for the 2023-24 campaign, but things did not improve. In 23 appearances, he found the net just once. Unsurprisingly, Forest declined to make the move permanent, and Origi returned to Milan, where he was again left without a role in the first team.
Despite Milan’s efforts to move him on, there were no takers, and even a stint with the reserves did little to change his fortunes. As the 2024-25 season began, Origi found himself in football limbo contracted to a club that had no place for him and without concrete offers elsewhere.
Throughout all this, the striker maintained complete silence on social media, avoiding the public eye as speculation about his future grew. But last week, Origi made his first post in a year, paying tribute to his former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident along with his brother Andre.
“Beyond words. Sending love and prayers to Diogo & Andre’s family, wife and kids. We will miss you. You’ll forever be remembered brother. 20 forever. You’ll Never Walk Alone,” Origi posted on Instagram.
The message was a rare glimpse into the emotional side of a player who has largely remained out of the spotlight in recent times. Origi and Jota played together at Liverpool between 2020 and 2022 and had built a strong bond during their time at the club.
Now, with just one year left on his contract and his market value having dropped from €20 million in 2019 to just €1 million, the 29-year-old faces a defining chapter. A move away from Milan could be vital if Origi is to reignite his fading career and avoid being remembered solely as a forgotten hero.
