Harambee Stars midfielder Duke Abuya is basking in the glory of a successful debut season with Yanga SC after helping the club clinch the Tanzania Premier League title. The Kenyan international played a pivotal role as Yanga sealed their fourth consecutive league championship with a 2-0 victory over fierce rivals Simba SC in the heated Kariakoo Derby.
The title-deciding clash was one of the most anticipated fixtures of the season, having been shrouded in controversy after both teams initially declined to honour the fixture due to disagreements over officiating and logistical concerns. In response, the Tanzania Football Federation stepped in and appointed referees from Egypt to ensure a fair and transparent contest.
When the game finally took place, Yanga showed their superiority, with Ivorian midfielder Pacome Zouzoua emerging as the hero. Zouzoua opened the scoring in the 67th minute before assisting Clement Mzize to double the lead, effectively putting the game—and the title—beyond Simba’s reach.
The win capped off a phenomenal run for Yanga, who have not tasted defeat in the league since December 2024. Their title charge was driven by an impressive 15-game winning streak, which underscored the team’s dominance in Tanzanian football this season.
Abuya, who joined Yanga in July 2024 from Singida Black Stars, was named in the starting lineup for the crucial derby and has been a consistent performer throughout the campaign. His move has proven to be a significant step forward in his career, having transitioned seamlessly from the Kenyan Premier League to become a vital asset for one of East Africa’s most successful clubs.
Taking to social media after the final whistle, Abuya expressed his gratitude and excitement over the triumph. “Thanking God … ever ambitious… we persevered as a team … thanks to all the support from the management, sponsors and our dear fans … y’all were with us throughout this journey of being champions,” he posted.
With the domestic league title secured, Abuya now shifts focus to the continental stage. Yanga are set to compete in next season’s CAF Champions League, and the Kenyan midfielder will be hoping to help the club progress beyond the group stage, where their journey ended this season. The title win not only cements his growing reputation but also opens doors for further success on a bigger stage.
