Harambee Stars forward Edward ‘Ondimo’ Omondi has described his first appearance for the national team as a moment he will treasure forever after playing in the 1-1 draw against Angola in their second Group A match at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Thursday, August 7, at Kasarani Stadium.
Omondi, who replaced Mohammed Bajaber in the squad after the forward moved to Tanzanian side Simba, was given a starting berth on the right wing by coach Benni McCarthy. The match provided the former Rainbow FC player with the perfect stage to showcase his skill, determination, and adaptability.
Throughout the first half, Omondi put in a tireless shift, combining his attacking duties with defensive support for right-back Daniel Sakari. The game took a twist when Marvine Nabwire received a red card before the break, forcing McCarthy to alter his tactics. Omondi adapted quickly, adopting a more defensive mindset to help his team maintain shape.
After halftime, the coach switched to a back five, pushing Omondi into a central striking role. Despite being substituted in the 78th minute for Ben Stanley Omondi, the youngster walked off the pitch satisfied with his debut performance.
Reflecting on the occasion, Omondi expressed pride and gratitude for the opportunity to wear the national colours. “This is a day I will never forget. It’s something I’ll mark on all my calendars,” he said, beaming with joy.
The moment was even more special for the striker, who grew up in Dandora. He was used to playing in front of a few thousand fans at the local stadium, but performing before a 50,000-strong crowd at Kasarani was a new and exhilarating experience. “The atmosphere here is on another level. There’s pressure when so many people are watching and expecting more from you,” he admitted.
Buoyed by his debut, Omondi believes this is just the start of his journey with the Harambee Stars. “This has been a huge step, and I know things will get better from here. The way I trained, I knew I was going to start,” he said confidently.
As Kenya prepare for crucial matches against Morocco and Zambia, Omondi called on fans to continue their support. With four points from two games, the Harambee Stars are well-placed to progress and Omondi is eager to play his part in that success.
