England has been requested to provide CCTV footage following an alleged tunnel confrontation between Tom Curry and Argentina’s Felipe Contepomi. The request comes after Argentina lodged a formal complaint, demanding an investigation into the incident.
Six Nations Rugby, which oversees the autumn Tests, has asked England to submit both the footage and a formal statement. The Rugby Football Union is also expected to provide any other relevant video capturing the post-match events before disciplinary decisions are considered.
The incident follows England’s narrow 27-23 victory, which was overshadowed by controversy over a late tackle by Curry. Argentina’s Juan Cruz Mallía suffered a traumatic torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee due to the tackle, escalating tensions.
Contepomi described Curry as a “bully” and accused him of shoving him in the tunnel and telling him to “fuck off.” He explained that Curry approached after the match while emotions were high, leading to the physical altercation in the tunnel. Contepomi emphasized that while rugby is a physical sport, players and staff should maintain respect and humility, particularly after causing serious injury.
The Argentina coach recounted: “He came and just shoves me. Luckily, there are probably cameras there. We were upset and told him no, but he pushed me in the chest. Maybe that’s his way of being a bully.”
On the pitch, Argentina players had already confronted Curry over the reckless tackle, with tempers flaring before the situation carried over to the tunnel.
England head coach Steve Borthwick defended Curry, highlighting his character and professionalism. Borthwick noted that while post-game emotions run high, Curry is respected both on and off the field. He said: “Tom’s character is impeccable. He’s a fantastic team player, very respectful, and his character is unquestionable.”
The Six Nations will review all provided materials before deciding whether disciplinary action is warranted, with England’s statement and any video evidence forming a key part of the assessment.
