Harambee Stars goalkeeper Patrick Matasi has spoken out about his uncertain future as he awaits a crucial decision from Football Kenya Federation (FKF) amid ongoing investigations into alleged match-fixing. Suspended provisionally for 90 days, the 37-year-old remains sidelined with no clarity on when or if he will return to professional football.
Matasi’s case became public after a video surfaced online in March, purportedly showing him agreeing to influence the outcome of a match. This prompted an official probe by FKF and led to his immediate suspension from all football-related activities in Kenya. Since then, the veteran shot-stopper has remained in limbo, clinging to hopes of a return.
Responding to questions about his current state, Matasi admitted that the situation remains bleak. He said he is still waiting for communication from the federation and remains uncertain about what the future holds for him in the sport he once dominated.
Matasi’s career has seen both highs and lows. He began his football journey in 2009 with Kabras United after switching from handball. His FKF Premier League debut came in 2011 with AFC Leopards, where he enjoyed a successful four-year stint, highlighted by a cup win in 2013. However, he also faced criticism for time-wasting tactics during a high-profile derby, which led to a late equaliser by rivals Gor Mahia.
His next move was to Posta Rangers in 2015, helping them earn promotion to the top flight a year later. That same period saw him make his debut for the national team, establishing himself as a dependable figure between the posts. In 2018, he made a move abroad, joining Ethiopian powerhouse Saint George FC, though he featured in fewer than 25 matches during his three-year stay.
A return to Kenya with Tusker FC in 2021 proved fruitful, as he played a key role in winning the league title. However, limited playing time due to a fallout with the coach forced a move to Kenya Police FC, where he revitalized his form and led them to a historic Mozzart Bet Cup triumph. His performance earned him the Best Goalkeeper award and helped the club qualify for continental football for the first time.
Before his suspension, Matasi had joined Kakamega Homeboyz. Now, his career hangs in the balance as he waits for FKF’s verdict—still unsure if he will ever step on the pitch again.
