Faith Cherotich delivered one of the most remarkable performances of the Tokyo World Championships, producing a blistering final surge to dethrone Winfred Yavi and clinch her first senior gold medal in the women’s 3000m steeplechase.
The 19-year-old Kenyan crossed the finish line in 8:51.59, setting a new Championship Record. Her breathtaking kick in the final 150 meters stunned her rivals and sealed a historic moment in her young career.
Despite the triumph, Cherotich admitted the race almost broke her. The searing pace left her doubting whether she could hold on, but her mental resilience proved decisive. “Honestly, I almost gave up. But I told myself, if I’ve reached the final, why not fight? I knew I’m strong at the last barrier, and I usually have a good kick. I believed in myself, and it worked.”
This victory marked a significant step in her progression. Having claimed bronze on her senior debut at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest and another bronze at the 2024 Olympics, Cherotich has now climbed to the top of the podium. “It’s my first time being a world champion. Last time, I was a bronze medalist, and now I have gold. My progress has been good since I joined the senior level — from bronze to gold. What an amazing moment. I thank God for this,” she said.
The race was filled with drama, including the unfortunate fall of former Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai, who could not finish. Showing maturity beyond her years, Cherotich extended sympathy to her rival, acknowledging the unpredictable challenges of the steeplechase.
Beating Yavi, the reigning champion and one of the most formidable names in the event, was more than just a personal milestone. It symbolized the shift of power to a new generation of athletes. Cherotich’s fearless approach highlighted her ability to combine tactical awareness with raw strength. She explained: “I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I told myself I could also be the best. No matter who I’m racing with, I have to fight for myself.”
With her breakthrough performance in Tokyo, Faith Cherotich has not only secured her place among the world’s elite but also ushered in a new era for Kenyan steeplechase running. Her victory will be remembered as the moment that reshaped the event’s hierarchy and announced the arrival of a new champion.
