The 2024/2025 FKF Premier League season concluded with high drama, heartbreak, and contrasting emotions, as FC Talanta and Nairobi City Stars were relegated following a tense final day of fixtures. While Kenya Police FC basked in the glory of their maiden Premier League title, Talanta and City Stars were left to count the cost of a season that ended in disappointment.
Six teams entered the final matchday with the threat of relegation hanging over them, but it was Talanta and City Stars who ultimately failed to survive the drop. FC Talanta’s fate was sealed following a 1-0 defeat away to relegation rivals Murang’a Seal. That single goal proved decisive in keeping Murang’a afloat and condemning Talanta to life in the second tier.
Nairobi City Stars, on the other hand, needed a win against Mathare United to have any chance of survival but were held to a goalless draw. The result meant they too would be demoted after failing to rise to the occasion in what was arguably their most important match of the season.
The relegation battle had seen the pendulum swing wildly, with Bidco United, Posta Rangers, Murang’a Seal, and Mara Sugar all flirting with the drop at various points during the final round. However, Bidco’s 2-1 comeback win over Sofapaka secured their safety, piling pressure on the rest of the contenders.
FC Talanta’s relegation brings an end to their four-year stint in the top flight, having been promoted in 2021. Nairobi City Stars, who had maintained their Premier League status since 2020, also saw their five-year run come to an abrupt end.
Both clubs now face the challenge of rebuilding in the second tier. FC Talanta will also struggle to keep hold of their star striker Emmanuel Osoro, who finished the season with 16 goals. Osoro’s performances have attracted interest from top-tier sides, and relegation is likely to accelerate his departure.
Posta Rangers, though safe from automatic relegation, are not entirely in the clear. They now face a nervy two-legged playoff against National Super League side Naivas FC, who finished third in the second tier. The outcome of this encounter will determine whether Rangers remain in the Premier League or join Talanta and City Stars in the NSL next season.
Replacing the relegated duo in the Premier League will be Nairobi United and APS Bomet, who earned promotion after finishing first and second in the National Super League. With fresh blood entering the top flight and former stalwarts making way, a new chapter awaits Kenyan football.
