Kenya is set to welcome a high-profile guest as FIFA President Gianni Infantino prepares to attend the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) final at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Infantino will be joined by Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe, along with presidents of Africa’s 54 football associations, for the much-anticipated clash between Morocco and Madagascar.
The attendance of Kenya’s top political leaders, including President William Ruto, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed, underscores the significance of the tournament. Infantino’s presence not only elevates the profile of the 30-day championship but also reflects growing confidence in Kenya’s football governance, particularly after FKF navigated past previous governance challenges.
The 2024 CHAN is widely regarded as a “dress rehearsal” for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will co-host. Infantino’s visit is thus seen as a public endorsement of Kenya’s capacity to host major continental, and potentially global, football events. Although he has never officially visited Kenya since becoming FIFA president nearly a decade ago, Infantino made a surprise appearance at the opening game of the African Football League in Tanzania in 2023 and met FKF President Mohammed during the 2024 CAF Awards in Marrakech, Morocco.
On the field, Morocco will be vying for a record-extending third CHAN title, having reached the final after a dramatic 5-3 victory over Senegal in penalties during the semi-finals. They had earlier defeated co-host Tanzania 1-0 in the quarter-finals, following a strong showing in the group stages where they finished second to Kenya in Group A. Madagascar, meanwhile, has captured hearts with an impressive tournament run. After finishing second to Tanzania in Group B, the island nation edged Kenya 4-3 on penalties in the quarter-finals before narrowly defeating Sudan 1-0 in extra time in Dar es Salaam to secure their spot in the final.
Ahead of the decisive showdown, an elaborate closing ceremony is expected, with spectators advised to enter Kasarani Stadium at least three hours before kickoff to fully enjoy the festivities and witness history in the making.
