Elijah Lagat, the former marathon champion and Member of Parliament for Chesumei, passed away on September 30, 2025, while receiving treatment in a hospital in Eldoret. He was 60 years old. Lagat was widely known for his remarkable achievement in winning the 2000 Boston Marathon, a victory that cemented his place as one of Kenya’s greatest long-distance runners. He clocked an impressive time of 2:07:41 in that race, gaining international recognition.
In addition to his sports career, Lagat had a distinguished political life. He served as the first Member of Parliament for the newly created Chesumei Constituency after winning the seat in 2013. Prior to this, he had contested the Emgwen Constituency seat in 2002 and 2007, eventually securing victory in 2007 under the ODM party. During his time in Parliament, he was known for his leadership and commitment to public service, particularly in the areas of social welfare and health.
Lagat was an advocate for inclusivity, always ensuring the voices of his constituents were heard. His tenure in Parliament saw him serve in various influential roles, including as Vice Chairman of the Labour and Social Welfare Committee and Chairman of the Sports Sub-committee. He also led the Health Services Sub-committee as its Chairman and was Vice Chairman of the Catering and Health Services Committee. His dedication to improving the welfare of his people was also reflected in his work as the Deputy Human Resources Manager for Nandi County.
Elijah Lagat was not only a celebrated athlete but also a respected leader in his community. His death has left a deep sense of loss, and many in Nandi County and beyond have expressed their sorrow at his passing. Governor Stephen Sang of Nandi County described Lagat as a distinguished leader, emphasizing his humility and wisdom in both his athletic career and political life.
In his final years, Lagat continued to serve as a board member for the National Campaign Against Drug Abuse Authority (NACADA), demonstrating his commitment to public service even after his active political career. His legacy as a national hero will live on in the hearts of many who were inspired by his achievements both on and off the track.
