Fran Kirby has announced her retirement from international football, bringing an end to a distinguished career with the England women’s team. The decision comes after she was informed that she would not be included in the squad for this summer’s UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 tournament in Switzerland.
The 31-year-old midfielder had initially planned to step away from international duty following the conclusion of the Euros. However, after learning that she would not be part of the final squad, she opted to bring that timeline forward. Her departure marks another high-profile retirement from the Lionesses’ Euro 2022-winning team, following the recent surprise exit of goalkeeper Mary Earps.
Kirby’s international journey began in 2014, and over the course of more than a decade, she earned 77 caps and scored 19 goals for the national side. A technically gifted and creative midfielder, she quickly established herself as one of the country’s most talented and dependable players, contributing significantly to England’s rise on the world stage in women’s football.
In a heartfelt message, Kirby reflected on her career with pride and emotion. “After being in the England team since I was 21, it’s time to close that chapter of my life,” she said. “I didn’t ever want this day to come, but I cannot tell you how proud I am that it happened.”
She went on to express gratitude for the opportunity to represent her country and acknowledged both the challenges and triumphs she experienced along the way. “My journey has been full of ups and downs, setbacks and achievements. Regardless of whatever was thrown at me, I want you all to know that every time I put on that England badge I gave it 100%.”
Kirby highlighted her dedication to the team, regardless of her role in the squad at any given moment. “Every single call-up, I accepted my role and did whatever was needed for the team. I wanted England to win. I’ve always been there to help England win.”
She also paid tribute to her mother, saying it had been a dream of hers to see her daughter represent England. “My mum had a dream of me representing my country and I’m so proud I was able to do that and play in front of you all.”
One of Kirby’s most memorable achievements came in 2022, when she started every game during England’s triumphant UEFA Women’s Euro campaign. That historic tournament not only brought silverware but also signaled a new era of visibility and respect for women’s football in England. “Starting in every game and winning the Euros in 2022 was a dream come true,” she wrote. “To be part of change in women’s football was one of the best experiences I could ever have imagined.”
Her departure leaves a significant void in the England setup, not just in terms of her playing ability but also her leadership and experience. While her name may not be on the Euro 2025 team sheet, her legacy and contributions to the sport will continue to resonate with fans and aspiring players alike.
