Edward ‘Ondimo’ Omondi’s journey from the dusty pitches of Dandora to leading the line for Harambee Stars at CHAN 2024 is a tale of persistence, belief, and raw talent. The 21-year-old striker, currently turning heads with his performances, was not even part of the final squad selection initially. However, fate had other plans. When injuries struck key players like Brian Musa and Mohammed Bajaber, the door reopened for Omondi and he was ready.
His selection was not just luck. Coming off an impressive debut top-flight season at Sofapaka, where he scored nine goals and assisted six, Omondi had already shown he belonged among the elite. His performances helped him earn a move to Kenya Police FC, a significant step up in his burgeoning career. Remarkably, he got to play his club home games at the newly refurbished Dandora Stadium, right where his dreams began.
Omondi’s drive was fueled by more than just ambition. Encouragement from experienced teammates like Humphrey Mieno played a vital role. Mieno constantly reminded the young striker of his potential, instilling belief and professionalism in him. Even after being dropped from the CHAN squad initially, Omondi never stopped training, never stopped praying, and never lost hope.
Now, under the guidance of South African coach Benni McCarthy, Omondi is learning from one of the continent’s best former strikers. McCarthy has been focusing on his finishing in training, helping sharpen his instincts and composure in front of goal. The difference in coaching styles between club and country has pushed Omondi to adapt quickly, a challenge he has embraced fully.
Representing Kenya on the CHAN stage means everything to Omondi. For him, it’s not just about football it’s about showing every kid in Dandora that dreams are valid. As Kenya faces heavyweights like DR Congo, Morocco, Angola, and Zambia in the so-called ‘group of death’, Omondi knows only relentless effort will carry them through.
