Manchester United have officially entered the race to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko after submitting a blockbuster €85 million offer, including bonuses. The Red Devils made their move on Monday, seeking to beat Premier League rivals Newcastle United, who had earlier submitted a €90 million bid for the Slovenian forward.
After weeks of speculation, United appear to have received a positive signal from Sesko’s camp, prompting them to table their offer. The club is eager to finalise the transfer swiftly as they look to overhaul their attack under new manager Ruben Amorim.
Newcastle, on the other hand, are on the brink of missing out on yet another top target this summer, having already failed to land Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike, and James Trafford. Adding to their worries, star striker Alexander Isak is reportedly pushing for a move to Liverpool, with a potential €170 million deal that could fund the Sesko transfer.
Despite United’s slightly lower bid, RB Leipzig are reportedly leaning toward selling to Newcastle. However, Sesko’s preference could tilt the balance in United’s favour. Leipzig’s decision to omit the 21-year-old from their squad for a recent friendly against Atalanta suggests they are preparing for a potential sale.
The club’s sporting department confirmed that interest from multiple clubs led to Sesko’s exclusion, indicating that negotiations are at an advanced stage. As pressure mounts from both English clubs, a resolution is expected within the next 24 hours.
United’s manager Ruben Amorim has big plans for his forward line, with Sesko targeted to join Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in a revamped attacking trio. However, United must first offload Rasmus Hojlund, whose underwhelming performances in the Premier League have left the club seeking alternatives.
While Newcastle remain hopeful of securing the young striker, Manchester United’s stature, project under Amorim, and the player’s reported openness to the move might see them win this high-stakes battle. A final decision is expected soon as all parties push for clarity before the new season begins.
