The New York Giants delivered a stunning performance on Thursday night, defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 34-17 and handing the defending Super Bowl champions their second consecutive loss.
Rookie Cam Skattebo was the star of the game, rushing for three touchdowns as the Giants powered past their NFC East rivals. Skattebo was unstoppable in the red zone, bulldozing his way into the end zone from four yards out and twice from the one-yard line. Another rookie, Jaxson Dart, also made a significant impact, rushing for a 20-yard touchdown and connecting with Wan’Dale Robinson for a 35-yard touchdown pass.
Dart, who had a tough outing in the previous week’s loss to New Orleans, bounced back strongly, completing 17 of 25 passes for 195 yards. Dart also added 58 rushing yards on 13 carries, with the only hiccup being a concussion test after a big hit. Skattebo had a career-high 98 yards on 19 carries, showcasing the strength and resilience of both rookies.
The Giants’ defense was equally impressive, sacking Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts three times and picking him off once. Defensive end Brian Burns was particularly dominant, recording two sacks and tying for the NFL lead with seven sacks on the season.
Despite the loss, Hurts and the Eagles had their moments. Hurts completed a short shovel-pass touchdown to Dallas Goedert and ran in a score after the Eagles executed the “tush push” successfully four consecutive times in the second quarter. However, Hurts’ accuracy faltered during the game, especially on a third-quarter overthrow to a wide-open DeVonta Smith that could have been a touchdown. The Eagles also struggled with turnovers, with Hurts throwing his first interception of the season to Cor’Dale Flott, who returned the pick 68 yards for a touchdown.
This defeat marks the Eagles’ first back-to-back losses since the end of the 2023 regular season, when they lost three straight to finish the year and were eliminated from the playoffs. The loss also dropped their record to 4-2, while the Giants improved to 2-4. The Eagles will need to regroup quickly if they are to maintain their status as Super Bowl contenders, while the Giants will hope to build on their strong performance moving forward.
