Former AFC Leopards team manager Benard Onyango has called on fans of the 13-time Kenyan champions to exercise patience and give the club’s new leadership, headed by Chairman Boniface Ambani, time to rebuild and restore the team’s former glory.
AFC Leopards have had a slow start to the 2025/26 Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) season, managing two draws in their opening fixtures — a 1-1 result against Sofapaka and a 2-2 draw with Posta Rangers. Despite the modest performance, Onyango believes the changes brought by Ambani’s leadership mark the beginning of a long-term revival project for the club.
He emphasized that meaningful transformation in football takes time, urging supporters to remain calm and united behind the chairman’s vision. Onyango described Ambani as a young, energetic, and strategic leader with a deep understanding of football dynamics, both on and off the pitch. Having previously served as a player and coach, Ambani’s football background is seen as a strong asset in guiding the club through its rebuilding phase.
“He has been there, he knows what is supposed to be done and when,” Onyango said, encouraging fans to give Ambani space to implement his plans without unnecessary pressure.
The former team manager further noted that the current AFC Leopards squad is dominated by young players who need time, consistency, and proper mentorship to develop into a competitive unit. According to Onyango, the team’s youthfulness presents a great opportunity for the club to build a solid foundation for future success if supported by steady investment and discipline.
“If you look at AFC, the majority are young players. They’re going to do wonders if the culture being cultivated continues,” he added.
However, Onyango warned that internal divisions or clashes within the club could easily derail the progress being made. He urged unity among players, management, and supporters, emphasizing that success will only come if everyone works together.
“The new leadership came in this year; we can’t expect results in one season. Give them two or three years before demanding trophies. With patience and support, they can bring back the glory days,” he concluded.
Despite finishing fourth in the recent ODM@20 Anniversary Tournament, the club remains optimistic that Ambani’s administration is steering AFC Leopards toward a brighter, more sustainable future.
