Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier has paid a deeply moving tribute to the late Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a devoted patron whose passion, generosity, and vision transformed both Gor Mahia and Kenyan football.
Rachier reflected on how his journey into football leadership was intertwined with Raila’s guidance and unwavering support. After his unsuccessful bid for the Gem parliamentary seat in 2007, Rachier turned his attention to football, a decision that would define his legacy. In 2008, Gor Mahia fans stormed his office and demanded he take over as club chairman, a move later endorsed by then-patron Raila Odinga.
According to Rachier, Raila’s early endorsement was instrumental in his rise and continued success as Gor Mahia chairman. “Without directing members on how to vote, Raila always advised them to evaluate leadership based on performance. He made it clear that he was personally satisfied with my stewardship,” Rachier recalled.
Beyond leadership, Raila’s impact was felt through his consistent financial and moral support. He played a key role in securing major sponsorship deals, including partnerships with Brookside Dairies through the Tuzo brand and betting company SportPesa. Whenever the club faced financial challenges before continental competitions, Raila personally stepped in to meet travel and accommodation costs, ensuring the team represented Kenya with pride.
His generosity was not limited to Gor Mahia. Raila often donated money to both Gor and AFC Leopards after the Mashemeji Derby and extended his support to football legends like the late Joe Kadenge. As a former footballer himself, having played for Luo Union and Germany’s Magdev University team, Raila’s love for the game ran deep. He even supported youth tournaments in Nyanza, providing young players with platforms to showcase their talent.
Rachier fondly remembered Raila’s enthusiasm at matches, saying he celebrated goals “almost athletically,” embodying the true spirit of a K’Ogalo fan. Their last meeting on October 3 was especially memorable — Raila donated Sh10 million to the club and encouraged them to win the league title.
A week later, after Gor Mahia’s triumph at the ODM 20th Anniversary tournament, Rachier sent Raila a message to arrange a trophy presentation — a message that went unanswered.
“Rest in peace, the grand enigma. Rest in peace, Baba,” Rachier concluded, marking the end of an era for Gor Mahia and Kenyan football.
