Gor Mahia’s 1-1 draw with Ulinzi Stars at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, came with a silver lining, as the club recorded a significant boost in gate collections. Despite dropping two points, the strong fan turnout helped the club generate impressive revenue from ticket sales, providing a timely financial boost.
The fixture marked Gor Mahia’s fifth match of the FKF Premier League season, and while the result denied them the chance to dethrone current league leaders Kakamega Homeboyz, the financial outcome was a positive takeaway. The treasurer confirmed that the club collected KSh 1,323,800 from ticket sales, marking one of the highest home match revenues so far this season.
The turnout was a remarkable improvement from their previous midweek clash against Mathare United, where attendance was relatively low despite the team’s 2-0 victory. Sunday’s crowd demonstrated the unwavering loyalty of the fans, whose energy and numbers continue to inspire the players and management alike.
The strong gate revenue could not have come at a better time for Gor Mahia, who are currently facing financial pressure following a KSh 300,000 fine imposed by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Disciplinary Committee. The club was sanctioned over security lapses during their season opener against Bidco United, when sections of supporters reportedly forced entry into the stadium, causing disorder and clashes with police. The fine must be settled within 14 days, and part of the latest matchday income is expected to help offset this expense.
In addition to the monetary penalty, the FKF issued a stern warning to the club to ensure better crowd control and adherence to safety protocols in upcoming fixtures. Gor Mahia officials have since pledged to strengthen their security arrangements and ticketing processes to avoid future incidents.
On the pitch, the team extended their unbeaten run to five matches despite the draw, following four consecutive victories over Sofapaka, KCB, Posta Rangers, and Mathare United. Coach Charles Akonnor has emphasized unity and collective growth within the squad as key factors behind their recent form.
As Gor Mahia continues to chase the league’s top spot, the financial rebound from gate collections reflects a renewed sense of togetherness among fans and management — a sign that the Green Army remains a vital force both on and off the field.
