Alpha Onyango, the Harambee Stars midfielder, has shifted his focus to Gor Mahia’s upcoming FKF Premier League clash with KCB, putting behind him the disappointment of a failed transfer move to Tunisian side Etoile Sportive du Sahel.
Onyango, who has been a key figure for Gor Mahia since 2017, had hoped to take the next step in his career by moving abroad. The midfielder reportedly had an offer of $100,000 (Ksh12.9 million) on the table from the Tunisian club, but Gor Mahia rejected the deal, insisting that Onyango remained crucial to their pursuit of the FKF Premier League title. Despite his best efforts to negotiate a move, the club stood firm, leaving Onyango frustrated but determined to continue his commitment to the team.
“I respectfully informed the club of my decision to leave, but it appears the deal will not sail through. I am gutted that my ambition to play football beyond our borders will flop,” Onyango said in an interview. However, he also expressed his belief that Gor Mahia’s midfield depth would ensure the club remained competitive even if he did leave.
With the transfer window for Tunisia now closed, Onyango has had to come to terms with the fact that his dream move will not materialize this season. He has now fully turned his attention to the upcoming match against KCB.
Gor Mahia began their campaign on a rough note, suffering a 1-0 defeat to Bidco United, but bounced back with a solid 2-0 victory over Sofapaka. Onyango is confident that the team will carry that momentum into their next fixture, despite the formidable challenge posed by KCB.
KCB have been in strong form so far this season, securing a 2-0 win over Tusker, followed by a 1-0 loss to Mathare United, and a 1-0 victory over Kariobangi Sharks. Onyango is aware of the challenge KCB presents but remains optimistic about his team’s chances.
“Our preparations have been good, and I am confident that we will give our best to secure the three points,” Onyango stated. “It will not be an easy match because KCB are a strong team, but after our first win, the confidence in the squad is high, and we believe we can emerge victorious.”
The upcoming clash will be an important test for both teams as they continue their battle for supremacy in the FKF Premier League.
