The government has reaffirmed its commitment to completing the construction of the 10,000-capacity Migori Stadium, a flagship sports infrastructure project in Migori County. The modern facility, which currently stands at 40 percent completion, is expected to significantly boost sports development and youth empowerment in the region upon completion.
The Sports Cabinet Secretary conducted an inspection tour of the site alongside Migori Governor Ochilo Ayako to assess the ongoing works and discuss measures to fast-track the remaining phases of construction. The visit underscored the strong partnership between the national and county governments in delivering the project within the projected timelines.
According to the ministry’s technical team, the construction works have progressed steadily, with major structural components already taking shape. The two levels of the main stands, dressing rooms, and essential drainage infrastructure are nearing completion, setting the stage for the next phase, which includes the playing surface and roofing installations.
The project has also brought direct economic benefits to the local community, employing more than 1,000 residents in various capacities. This has provided much-needed income to families while promoting skills development among youth involved in the construction process. Local suppliers and contractors have equally benefited from the government’s initiative to source materials and labor locally, thereby boosting the county’s economy.
Once completed, the Migori Stadium will serve as a modern multi-purpose facility capable of hosting regional and national sporting events. It will feature a standard football pitch, a running track, spectator stands, and additional amenities such as changing rooms, offices, and training areas.
Beyond sports, the facility is envisioned to become a hub for talent identification, nurturing, and scouting, offering young people a platform to showcase their abilities in athletics, football, and other disciplines. The government hopes that the stadium will encourage greater youth participation in sports and help discover new talent from the region.
The project forms part of the government’s broader sports infrastructure development agenda aimed at improving facilities across the country. Similar projects are underway in other counties, with the goal of decentralizing access to modern sporting infrastructure and promoting grassroots sports growth.
